A Mattel legnépszerűbb játéka a mai napig a Barbie-baba, melynek világa egyre inkluzívabb. Különféle foglalkozású és származású nőket mutat be a figura; most egy indiai-amerikai tudós került sorra.

Az Utahi Egyetemet erősíti Nalini Nadkarni, aki egy kifejezetten férfias mezőnyben teljesít: asztrofizika, természetfotó, rovartan és dzsungel-biológia tartozik a tevékenységi körébe.

Az esőerdők ökológiáját tanulmányozó, 65 éves hölgy úttörőnek számít: canopy-technikával járta be a hatalmas fák lomb-szintjeit. Sőt: már a kétezres évek elején maga öltöztetett be használt Barbie-kat laboros kolléganői segítségével: méghozzá saját munkaruháik alapján.

In the early 2000s, Nalini Nadkarni and her lab colleagues came up with the idea of TreeTop Barbie, a canopy researcher version of the popular Barbie doll that could be marketed to young girls. She pitched the idea to Mattel, the company that makes Barbie. "When I proposed this idea they said, 'We're not interested. That has no meaning to us," says Nadkarni. "We make our own Barbies." Nadkarni decided to make them herself anyway... Get the full @npr article link in our bio! . TreeTop Barbie néven vagy 400 babát eladott, ám akkor még a játékgyártó óriástól függetlenül, a saját szakállára árusította a figuráit. Konferenciákra is vitt a felspécizett játékokból.
